Web Site Design Checklist

There are many areas of web site design that are overlooked, even by some professional designers. This checklist is to help you make sure that your web site is the best it can be. It can even be used to help your designer know what you want.
I. Do you have a clear idea of your goals?
A. What is your product or service? __________________________________________

C. What is your web site marketing budget? ___________________________________
D. Who is your targeted market? ____________________________________________
II. What do you hope to accomplish with your web site? Or what are your marketing goals?

IV. Who will design and host and/or maintain your web site? _________________________

V. Web site must be search engine friendly.
q Do you have "keyword" meta-tags in place?
q Do you have "description" meta-tags in place?
q Do you have "no frames" meta-tags if you're using frames?
q Do you have the top part of your home page content rich with key information?
VI. Home page must make a positive impression.
q Is the lay out pleasing to the eye?
q Is all pertinent information included?
q Is the text readable?
q Is the background complementary?
VII. Graphics and pictures should be pertinent and quick loading.
q Have you limited the number and size of graphics and pictures per page?
q Have you used height and width parameters in image tags to speed loading time?
q Have you used the best image quality and compression ratio for the smallest file size?
(This is an advanced topic, but it is important to the loading speed of your pages.)
VIII. You should avoid anything that might detract from the usability of your web pages, as well as copyright infringement, clutter, and novelty items.
q Have you made sure there is no unlicensed copyrighted material on your pages?
q Have you avoided blinking and/or scrolling text?
q Have you avoided clutter and novelty items such as animations?
q Have you avoided auto-playing music files, especially embedded looping ones that cannot be turned off?
q If you're using frames, have you an made an alternative non-framed version available?
IX. Navigation must be simple.
q Have you included a link back to your home page on every page?
q Have you included your e-mail address on every page?
q Is it simple to move around your site?
X. Web site links are a good marketing tool.
q Have you included links to sites of interest for your customers?
q Have you attempted to get reciprocal links from the web sites you've linked to?
